Entry from J.Harvey's commentary to the Folio Society facsimile of the Surinam Album (London, 2006):

'This watercolour shows the metamorphosis of a frog, from egg and tadpole to adult. The presence of vocal sacs at the corner of the mouth indicates this is an adult male. It has proved difficult for experts to identify this species. It is possibly Leptodactylus sp, but does not appear to match any known species from Surinam. It is even possible that the frog is a European Green Frog. The painting of the adult is quite stylized especially the shape of the snout, size and position of the nostrils, appearance of the eyes and general body shape. The yellow flowering plant is a species of Ranunculus' (pond water crowfoot).

Merian records in her Study Book in 1686 (when she was living with the Labadist community in Wieuwerd, Friesland) how she dissected frogs and studied their reproductive systems, and there is a sheet of studies of frogspawn, tadpoles and eggs to go with the description(Study Book, p.293/76, no.203, Library of the Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg; see Reitsma, pp.84-85). There are three versions of this composition, of which this is the weakest the other two being in the Royal Collection, and an unfinished one in St Petersburg. This one has been attributed to Dorothea Graff.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
